Barco de Fogo is a June festival tradition from Estância, in southern Sergipe, Brazil, created in the early 20th century by Chico Surdo. It is already recognized under state law, but the proposed federal recognition has not become law: as checked on October 23, 2026, Bill 2,772/2024 was still being considered by Brazil's Federal Senate. Visitors should know that performances are scheduled for specific events, mainly during the June festival season, and do not take place every day.
Where Barco de Fogo came from and what a performance looks like
The Estância city government identifies its creator as Francisco da Silva Cardoso, known as Chico Surdo, who was born on June 11, 1907. According to the cultural history presented by the municipality, his interest in boats inspired a festive creation that became closely associated with the city's São João celebrations.
The object is handmade, with a lightweight boat-shaped frame and colorful decorations. Suspended from a steel cable by pulleys, it moves along the cable propelled by fireworks called espadas, leaving a trail of bright sparks. Its construction and presentation preserve skills passed down by local fireworks makers and artisans. This is a pyrotechnic display, not a boat ride or a tourist attraction operating continuously.
What Sergipe state law has already recognized
There are two separate state milestones. Law 7,301, dated December 12, 2011, added Barco de Fogo Day to Sergipe's official calendar, to be observed every June 11, and expressly stated that the date is not a public holiday. Law 7,690, dated July 23, 2013, and published on August 1 that year, declared Estância's Barco de Fogo part of Sergipe's imemorial heritage, using the specific term in the legislation, and provided for cultural and tourism support measures.
The Estância government and tourism portal use the description Capital Brasileira do Barco de Fogo, or Brazilian Capital of Barco de Fogo, to refer to the city's cultural reputation. This should not be confused with the title Capital Nacional do Barco de Fogo proposed in a federal bill, which requires the legislative process to be completed and a law to enter into force.
Where the national recognition proposal stands
Introduced by Senator Rogério Carvalho in July 2024, Bill 2,772/2024 proposes granting Estância the title of National Capital of Barco de Fogo and recognizing the pyrotechnic tradition as an expression of national culture. On April 7, 2026, the Senate's Education and Culture Committee approved a substitute version, which was subject to an additional round of consideration. On April 15, the bill was removed from the committee's agenda and left ready for further review.
When checked on October 23, 2026, the Senate's official record still listed the bill as under consideration, with its latest recorded status dated April 15. Senate News also reported on October 1 that it awaited another committee review. Approval of a substitute text at committee level therefore does not mean that a federal law granting this recognition is already in force.
A separate matter is federal cultural heritage registration through the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan), Brazil's national heritage institute. The city government reported discussions about that possibility in 2021. The report of those discussions does not, by itself, establish that federal registration was completed, and that process is distinct from the Senate bill.
When it takes place and where to watch
Performances are linked to Estância's São João festivities, particularly in June. June 11 has historical significance and is a state commemorative date, but it is not a fixed schedule of performances and does not guarantee a display at any particular time.
As a documented example of one specific edition, the city government announced a release of 11 Barcos de Fogo for June 11, 2026, in front of the Municipal Palace near Praça Barão do Rio Branco, in the city center. That program was for a past event and does not confirm further performances later in 2026 or in 2027. The tourism website also lists Praça da Catedral and opening hours for the listed tourist site; these details must not be interpreted as daily performance times for the fireworks display.
What to check before visiting Estância
- Consult the official program for the edition you plan to attend and find the specific Barco de Fogo announcement, including date, time and venue.
- Confirm admission conditions, whether entry is free, viewing areas, accessibility and safety guidance with the organizer, rather than assuming that earlier years' rules still apply.
- Distinguish visits to the historic center and other tourist sites from the fireworks performances, which require their own event schedule.
This historical and visitor guide is based on sources checked on October 23, 2026. Those sources did not confirm any new future performance, ticket price or display time for a visit after that date.
