The Museu do Homem Sergipano (MUHSE), at Rua Estância, 228, in central Aracaju, remains closed to public visits and exhibitions in October 2026. The Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), which manages the museum, reports that the building is undergoing modernization and expansion while the institution is being reorganized. For residents and tourists, the practical consequence is clear: there are no regular visits to the collection at that address, and no definitive reopening date has been announced.

Is the museum open for visitors?

No. An institutional UFS report published on October 19, 2026 states that MUHSE is still closed to the public for exhibitions. Its record in Brazil’s National Museum Register, last updated on September 16, 2026, likewise marks it as “Closed” and lists no public opening days or visiting hours.

The resumption of academic and administrative activities should not be mistaken for the reopening of exhibition rooms to tourists.

What is happening to the building and collections?

According to UFS, renovation and expansion work at the Rua Estância building began in 2022 and encountered difficulties and interruptions. Meanwhile, museum staff are identifying, inventorying, documenting and carrying out preventive conservation of collections, with participation by university students and professionals.

The collections include archaeological, ethnographic, photographic, documentary and bibliographic materials, among other holdings connected to Sergipe’s memory. The university reports that Museology and Library Science internships, along with teaching, research and outreach activities, have resumed. This work continues even though exhibitions are not open to the public.

When will it reopen?

UFS has not announced a definitive date. The Ibram museum record lists April 2027 in its fields for the expected month and year of opening, but this is a forecast entered in a register, not confirmation that visitors will be admitted that month. The UFS statement of October 19, 2026 provides no specific reopening day.

April 2027 therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed visiting schedule. A change in status will require a new official update from MUHSE or UFS.

Where is it and how can visitors check before traveling?

The exhibition building is at Rua Estância, 228, in central Aracaju, but it is closed to visitors. The official MUHSE page states that its temporary administrative office operates in Didática 7, room 504, on the UFS campus in São Cristóvão. This administrative address does not mean that a tourist exhibition is open on campus.

For possible updates, the museum lists muhse@academico.ufs.br and telephone numbers +55 (79) 3194-7705 and +55 (79) 3194-7704. Its institutional page lists administrative office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. These are not public visiting hours. Anyone planning a trip should first confirm the current access situation and any specific activities directly with the institution.

Information checked on October 23, 2026, Sergipe local time (UTC-3).
