In Sergipe, Brazil, the Alfabetiza Sergipe grant of up to R$ 600 in 2026 is not automatically paid to everyone enrolled. To qualify for the incentive, a participant must demonstrate registration in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico), fall within the number of grant places made available, and meet the attendance and assessment requirements. The state program serves people aged 15 or over who can demonstrate that they have not been taught to read and write. On October 21, 2026, the Sergipe government reported that the year's activities were nearing completion, without announcing a new enrollment period.
Who can receive the grant?
State Law No. 9,622 of January 17, 2025, provides for up to 8,000 grants of R$ 600 per annual edition for literacy learners, subject to legal requirements and program criteria. To take part in Alfabetiza Sergipe, a person must be at least 15 and show that they are not yet literate. According to the October 21 state announcement, a learner may not also be enrolled in a school belonging to the state public education network.
To receive the grant, simply attending classes is not enough. The person must document registration in CadÚnico and be among those selected within the publicly allocated number of grants. The law sets out tie-breaking criteria: being younger, having children and having a documented disability. These criteria do not replace other conditions and do not imply automatic payment.
The distinction is apparent in the 2026 figures: the state government reported 8,612 enrolled participants and approximately 4,000 people entitled to the benefit. This describes eligibility, not confirmation that every grant has already been paid in full. The statutory ceiling of up to 8,000 annual grants likewise does not guarantee 8,000 payments.
How is the R$ 600 paid?
The incentive is a maximum total over the course, not R$ 600 per month. The breakdown announced by the State Department of Education (Seed), consistent with Decree No. 1,058/2025, is as follows:
- First course unit: R$ 100 after completion and proof of at least 75% attendance in that unit.
- Second course unit: R$ 100 with the same attendance requirement.
- Third course unit: R$ 100 with the same attendance requirement.
- Fourth course unit: R$ 100 with the same attendance requirement.
- Final assessment: R$ 200, conditional on taking the assessment and meeting the minimum overall attendance requirement.
Therefore, 75% attendance across the course as a whole does not replace unit-by-unit checks for the R$ 100 payments. Taking the final assessment is also required for the last installment. The official announcement did not set out a timetable of individual deposit dates. Payment depends on compliance with the conditions and each beneficiary's status.
I am enrolled but have not been paid. Where can I check?
The first practical step is to ask your class coordinator or the program team to verify your grant-beneficiary status, the attendance record for each unit, proof of CadÚnico registration and, when relevant, the final assessment. This is guidance on what to check, not an official list of mandatory appeal documents or a guarantee that payment will be released.
For unresolved questions, the State Department of Education Ombudsman's Office accepts requests for clarification and complaints. The department lists telephone number (79) 3194-3289 and in-person service at Rua Gutemberg Chagas, 169, Block VI, Room 64, DIA neighborhood, Aracaju, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. People in towns outside the capital can also use the complaint channels listed on the ombudsman's page; program support should not be assumed to be available only in Aracaju.
A separate rule applies to adverse decisions: Decree No. 1,286/2025 added the possibility of an administrative appeal within 10 business days after official notice when a grant is denied, suspended or canceled, with Seed making the final decision. Check the appropriate filing procedure and channel with the department first. An ombudsman complaint should not automatically be treated as a formally filed appeal.
Are enrollment and 2027 rules already announced?
Seed's announced enrollment period for 2026 ran from March 9 to April 30, 2026. In its October 21 announcement, the government described the cycle as nearing completion: there were 138 classes in the first half of the year across 31 municipalities and 207 new classes opened in the second half. Those figures do not constitute a new call for enrollment.
As of this check on October 21, 2026, the specific sources reviewed contained neither a 2027 enrollment calendar nor new grant-value regulations for that year. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that applications are open, to give individual payment dates or to imply automatic continuation of the benefit in the following edition.
