Sergipe school calendar: state classes may run until January 2027

After the strike, Seed set January 20, 2027, as the reference date for the end of regular classes, with final remedial activities possible through January 28. Each state school must confirm its schedule; the measure does not automatically cover municipal or private schools.

In Sergipe's state-run public school system in Brazil, January 20, 2027, is the reference date for the end of regular classes for the 2026 school year. Final remedial assessments and activities may continue until January 28, 2027. The Sergipe State Department of Education (Seed) announced these dates on October 15, 2026, following a teachers' strike, but each school may adjust its schedule. The guidance does not automatically apply to municipal or private schools.

Which dates should families and students watch?

StageReference announced by SeedWhat to check with the school
Third assessment periodLate October and early November 2026Each exam date and the topics covered
Fourth assessment periodEarly January 2027Exam dates and class-specific instructions
End of regular school activitiesJanuary 20, 2027, as a reference dateThe school's last regular class day and any make-up sessions
Final remedial periodThrough January 28, 2027Who must attend, dates and procedures

January 28 does not mean that every student will attend regular classes until that day. Seed distinguishes the end of normal school activities from the period allocated to final remedial work. Likewise, January 20 should not be assumed to be the mandatory, identical end date at every school.

Why was the 2026 school year extended into 2027?

According to Seed, the changes were established under Ordinance No. 6,874/2026 following 27 days of strike action and two separate work stoppages. The stated purpose is to make up suspended school activities and meet the 200 school days required for basic education. The changes affect school planning, assessments and time for reviewing previously covered material.

State-run schools may reschedule make-up days, including choosing Saturdays as school days, subject to the department's guidance. Seed said the decisions should take local holidays and each school's needs into account. A Saturday scheduled for make-up classes at one school should therefore not be assumed to apply at another.

What changes for assessments, subject review and remedial work?

The state's announcement provides for a period of review and learning recovery covering material taught through August 2026 before the third assessment period, scheduled for late October and early November. The fourth assessment period is planned for early January 2027. The plan also includes Learning Intensification Studies, ongoing remedial support and final remedial activities.

These are network-wide reference points, but precise exam dates, make-up lessons and final remedial arrangements need confirmation with each school's administration or office. The general announcement reviewed does not contain a separate calendar for every school.

How can families check their own school's schedule?

  1. Contact the office or administration of the state school where the student is enrolled and request the updated 2026 calendar following the strike.
  2. Check the make-up school days and whether any Saturdays have been scheduled for the class.
  3. Ask for specific third and fourth assessment dates, the final remedial schedule and the last day of regular lessons.
  4. If the school's schedule differs from the state-level announcement, request clarification from the school. The Regional Education Directorate responsible for the school may also provide guidance on the state network's planning.

Seed reported that its School Inspection Department is providing guidance to Regional Education Directorates and school managers, with its technology team supporting calendar changes. This does not replace confirmation with the individual school.

Does the change cover municipal and private schools?

Not automatically. The announced ordinance concerns the state public school system, including state-administered schools in Aracaju and municipalities elsewhere in Sergipe. Municipal school families should consult the education department in their own municipality and their school. Private-school families should check with their institution directly. The state's dates must not be applied to these other systems without a specific applicable decision.

Does January 2027 mark the start of a new academic year?

That is not what the announcement says. The January 2027 dates concern the completion and remedial phase of the 2026 school year, extended after the stoppages. The announcement reviewed does not, by itself, establish the first day of the new 2027 school year.

Research update: October 29, 2026. The general dates were checked against the official communication dated October 15. The government page links to Ordinance No. 6,874/2026, but the complete file could not be opened during this review. Families should therefore confirm school-specific dates, any exceptions and subsequent official changes with their school and Seed.
