To visit the mouth of the São Francisco River from Aracaju, the simplest option is a day trip combining road transport to the Brejo Grande area, on Sergipe's northern coast, with a boat ride to where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. Travellers can also drive and hire a boat separately. On October 21, 2026, two published offers from the operators consulted advertised R$ 200 and R$ 230 per person, respectively. These are advertised reference prices, not guaranteed fares for every date.

The decision depends less on the lowest advertised figure than on the boat's departure point, who provides the road transfer, whether a guide is included, which meals are excluded and how booking works. This excursion takes up much of the day, and the river mouth lies between two different municipalities: Brejo Grande in Sergipe and Piaçabuçu in Alagoas.

Where is the river mouth, and how do Brejo Grande and Piaçabuçu differ?

The river mouth is where the São Francisco River flows into the Atlantic, on the border between Sergipe and Alagoas. Brejo Grande is on the Sergipe side, while Piaçabuçu is on the Alagoas side. Booking a trip to the same destination therefore does not necessarily mean boarding in the same town or following the same road and river route.

In tourism material published in 2019, the Brejo Grande municipal government states that the municipality is approximately 137 km from Aracaju and that boats could be chartered from the pier in the town centre. This helps identify an independent-travel option but does not establish current prices, timetables, boat availability or the current operation of any particular boarding point.

How to reach the excursion from Aracaju

With an agency: travellers book round-trip road transport and a boat excursion together when both services are listed as included. Aracaju Viagens e Passeios advertises departure between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and an expected return to Aracaju between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. Sergipe Turismo advertises departures from 7:00 a.m. and return to hotels around 5:00 p.m. These are operators' published schedules and must be reconfirmed for the chosen day.

Driving independently: the municipality's older tourism reference describes a journey via BR-101, then state roads towards Neópolis, Japoatã, Pacatuba and Brejo Grande. Because this municipal text is old, drivers should check their route and traffic conditions before leaving. Once in the municipality, they must still find a boat-tour provider and agree on the price, duration and exact meeting place.

Always request the boarding town and address in writing. An excursion with road departure from Aracaju may use Brejo Grande or another support point selected by the operator. Piaçabuçu, in Alagoas, is also a base for boat trips to the river mouth. Do not confuse transport between the towns or a regular river crossing with the full sightseeing trip to the estuary.

Published prices: what each offer includes

Booking optionAdvertised price per personListed inclusionsConditions and questions
Aracaju Viagens e PasseiosR$ 200Transport, guide and boat tripAdvertised for Thursdays, subject to the schedule, with at least four people in the group; meals and local purchases are extra
Sergipe TurismoR$ 230Road transfer and boat tripWebsite advertises daily operation; lunch, drinks, buggy rides, speedboats and optional activities excluded; confirm whether a guide is included
Own car and locally hired boatPrice on requestDepends on the agreementAdd fuel, possible tolls, parking, boat, any guide and meals; no current standalone boat fare was verified

How to compare: the nominal difference between the advertised offers is R$ 30 per person. For four adults paying the displayed full prices, this would amount to R$ 800 for the R$ 200 offer and R$ 920 for the R$ 230 offer, a difference of R$ 120. This is only an arithmetic illustration, excluding meals, extras, any applicable fees and confirmation of available places. It does not imply that the two packages provide identical services.

The R$ 200 offer mentions a 10% booking deposit and says detailed pickup instructions will be sent before the trip. The company also publishes its own cancellation conditions. Read the applicable terms before paying and check whether departure is actually confirmed for your date. The R$ 230 offer lists transport and boat travel, but the description reviewed does not list a guide among its inclusions. Do not assume a guide is included simply because other operators provide one.

How much does travelling without an agency cost?

The consulted sources provide no verified basis for quoting a fixed standalone boat-trip price from the Brejo Grande pier. The per-person cost depends on group size, type of vehicle and the quote obtained directly from the boat operator. To compare it with a package from Aracaju, divide shared expenses by the number of passengers, then add individual costs.

  • Road travel: fuel, parking and any tolls for the round trip.
  • Boat travel: price per boat or per passenger, duration, number of stops, capacity and any guide.
  • Food: lunch, water and other drinks, generally excluded from the offers compared here.
  • Extras: buggy rides, speedboats, crafts and optional activities, only if desired and available.

Independent travel can provide more scheduling flexibility but is not automatically cheaper. For one person or a couple, sharing the road and boat costs among fewer people may be more expensive. For a larger group, only a current quote can establish which alternative offers better value.

What to check before booking the boat

  • Departure point: precise meeting address in Aracaju and the town, pier or wharf used for boat boarding.
  • Final price: adult and child fares, payment method, deposit, fees and anything payable directly on site.
  • Itinerary: sailing time, stops at the dunes, opportunities for swimming and possible views of the Cabeço Lighthouse, without assuming every attraction is guaranteed.
  • Safety and accessibility: boat conditions, suitable life jackets, access to the vessel and arrangements for children or people with reduced mobility.
  • Changes: policy for rain, wind, navigation conditions, timetable changes, cancellation or rescheduling.

Sergipe Turismo describes approximately one hour of boat travel to the river-mouth area, plus a stop of around one and a half hours near the dunes. That is this company's advertised itinerary, not a universal standard for every boat. Sailing and stops depend on the day's conditions and the service booked. Do not enter areas with strong currents or assume that a visible meeting of river and sea marks a safe swimming spot.

Does the new Brejo Grande waterfront change the boarding location?

In a statement dated September 11, 2026, the Sergipe state government reported delivery of the first phase of the Orla Jovina Tojal waterfront in Brejo Grande, including urban improvements and public gathering areas. This is an institutional statement about the municipality's infrastructure. The new waterfront does not establish that all agencies now board there, that independent tours are available at any hour or that the tourist pier operates at a fixed fare. Confirm the boarding point with your chosen company or boat operator.

Which option is more suitable?

For visitors staying in Aracaju who do not want to drive and prefer a predictable price for transport and the boat, a package can simplify the day. Travellers with a car who want to make their own arrangements can request a boat quote in Brejo Grande, but should settle the vessel, schedule and costs before heading out. In both cases, compare the actual total per person, not just the promotional headline.

Information checked on October 21, 2026: the R$ 200 and R$ 230 prices are advertisements observed on the companies' own websites and may change without notice; neither direct availability, bookings, standalone boat fares nor conditions for sailing on a specific date were confirmed. This article is not an advertisement and does not endorse either operator.
