Drivers, pedestrians and residents of western Aracaju still need to account for roadworks on Avenida Maranhão as Iguá Sergipe replaces a major water pipeline. In its October 14, 2026 progress report, the utility stated that 75% of the work was complete and that all new piping had been installed. Protection and discharge devices and connections to the existing network were still pending. Completion is scheduled for December 2026, but no exact date is guaranteed. This article reflects notices reviewed on October 23, 2026.
What work remains?
According to Iguá, the remaining phase involves installing network protection and discharge devices and making the connections needed to integrate the new main into the existing water supply system. The company reported an investment of R$5 million to replace infrastructure installed about 30 years ago. Its stated aim is to reduce pipe failures and make distribution more reliable.
Pipes being installed does not mean the project is finished. The reported 75% figure refers to overall project progress, not to 25% of the pipes still awaiting installation. The October 14 notice gives no firm date for fully reopening the avenue, no block-by-block schedule and no date for the new line to enter service.
Where did work begin, and why are both 3.8 km and 3.3 km reported?
The May 20, 2026 start notice located the first work section near Avenida General Euclides Figueiredo, heading toward Rua Pará, and announced the replacement of 3,800 meters. Reports published in July, August and October instead described the length as approximately 3.3 kilometers. The documents reviewed do not explain the 500-meter difference. The two figures therefore should not be treated as identical, nor can a formal reduction in the project be asserted without clarification from the utility.
What are the traffic restrictions on Avenida Maranhão?
Iguá's October 14 notice describes partial daytime closures implemented in stages, with coordination involving Aracaju's municipal traffic authority, SMTT, and City Hall. The notice does not itself identify which lane will be closed on a particular day.
In a notice published on October 13, SMTT announced a temporary detour starting at 8 a.m. on October 14 in the Santos Dumont neighborhood, toward Bugio, near the junction of Avenida Maranhão and Avenida General Euclides Figueiredo. That phase was expected to last three days, and the detour would apply only while crews were working at the location. The notice concerned October 14 to 16 and does not establish that a closure was still active on October 23. The original May announcement also envisaged one-lane daytime traffic and two-way traffic at night, but that earlier arrangement is not a guarantee for every subsequent night.
For a specific journey, consult newer SMTT notices and on-site road signs. None of the documents reviewed establishes a current permanent diversion or alternative route that can safely be recommended.
Does the project mean neighborhood water outages?
Not necessarily. Excavation or a partial street closure concerns roadworks; an interruption to water supply requires a separate operational notice specifying affected places, times and expected restoration. The October 14 progress report does not announce a general water outage associated with this project or list neighborhoods without water.
Residents seeking information about their particular address should consult Iguá Sergipe's Works and Maintenance notices, checking the location, date and validity of each alert. The pipeline works alone do not establish that all of western Aracaju is without water.
When is completion expected?
Iguá's published target remains December 2026. Its updates reported 25% on July 16, 50% on August 18 and 75% on October 14. These figures are company-reported updates, not independent on-site measurements. The schedule may change, and the reviewed documents do not provide a precise completion date or a date for fully reopening Avenida Maranhão.
