Accidents involving animals on Sergipe's state highways caused nine deaths in 2026, according to a report from the Highway Police Battalion (BPRv) updated until October 19. In the same count, Operation Jaguar-Boiadeiro collected 227 animals in 184 operations. Among the points with the most gatherings are SE-245, in Riachuelo, Avenida Lauro Porto and SE-120, in Ilha das Flores. These numbers indicate the concentration of animals collected, not a ranking of the places with the most deaths.

Where there were the most collections

By municipality, the balance attributed to BPRv shows 29 animals collected in Riachuelo, 19 in Aracaju, 18 in Nossa Senhora do Socorro, 15 in Ilha das Flores and 11 in Pirambu. By section or route, there are 21 collections on SE-245 in Riachuelo, 18 on Avenida Lauro Porto and 13 on SE-120 in Ilha das Flores. The published survey does not show the distribution of the nine deaths by road. Therefore, it is not possible to say that the roads with the most traffic jams are the ones where fatal accidents are concentrated.

What the 2026 numbers show

The 227 collections represent a drop of 39.6% compared to the 376 animals recorded in 2025, according to the survey released on October 20. Deaths in accidents involving animals rose from eight in 2025 to nine in 2026 in the reported period. Comparisons must consider that the 2026 data is partial, until October 19, and that the collections also reflect the inspection activity, not just the number of animals on the tracks.

Serious occurrence on SE-230

A case investigated in Poço Redondo occurred on July 31, 2026, on SE-230: a Samu ambulance hit an animal on the road and collided with a truck. Three people died and six were injured, according to investigation information released in September. The Civil Police concluded the investigation and identified the person responsible for the animal, according to the report consulted. An indictment does not equate to a judicial conviction. The case illustrates the severity of the risk, but does not allow other deaths to be automatically attributed to the same location.

How to reduce risk on the road

When you see an animal on the road or on the shoulder, the guidance reproduced from DER/SE and BPRv is to gradually reduce speed, avoid sudden movements and report the incident to the police with the most precise location possible, without putting yourself in danger. Owners must maintain fences and containment structures in adequate condition to prevent animals from accessing roads. The determination of responsibility in an accident depends on the specific circumstances and the competent bodies.

Supervision and withdrawal limits

In September, DER/SE and BPRv announced the collection of 13 animals in actions on the SE-100, SE-204, SE-226, SE-245 and SE-265 highways, in locations in Pirambu, Pacatuba, Capela, Malhador and Itaporanga d’Ajuda. These records are from a specific operation and should not be confused with the most concentrated sections of the annual balance sheet. This article deals with state highways inspected by BPRv and does not present a complete map of Sergipe's federal highways.
